At least thirteen individuals killed and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” declared the national leader.

The official announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose term ended the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a significant expansion of its duties in civilian projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing expectations to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked significant concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."

In response, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
