Prime Small Screen Choices: Seven Can't-Miss Films This Week

Highlighted Choice

This Satirical Thriller

Director Coralie Fargeat's daring commentary examines the demanding standards for feminine aesthetics as well as the perceived horrors of growing older. The veteran actress delivers a masterful portrayal playing Elisabeth, an aging celebrity forced into hosting an aerobics show on TV. Forced aside due to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, she turns to a mysterious and gruesome treatment titled this experimental method. This generates a younger clone portrayed by Margaret Qualley, resulting in a progressively toxic connection between them. October 17th, the streaming service Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10

This Agatha Christie-esque thriller includes Knightley playing Laura, a top-notch writer who takes a hiatus from writing about international wars to board an opulent ship alongside a terminally ill wealthy inheritor and philanthropist, her husband, plus additional affluent guests. But after an enigmatic female goes overboard during the evening and everyone insists she wasn't real, the reporter's sleuthing skills kick in. Streaming currently, on Netflix

Presence Film

Steven Soderbergh tests his directorial skills with this clever supernatural story filmed completely through the eyes of the phantom. When a household with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe moves into their fresh home, the camera – as the unseen entity – follows them around. Chloe seems sensing the supernatural presence, and the entity appears guarding her. Yet what is the reason? This is an entertaining concept that remains concise, with a twist that may be unexpected. Saturday 11 October, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

The iconic actor embraces his eccentric image in this autobiographical spoof. He acts as a self-obsessed film star named Nicolas Cage who agrees to a $1m payday to attend a celebration in Mallorca for the rich Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Hired by the intelligence agency to spy on the potential kingpin, his unconventional method proves useful. This Saturday, evening, on Channel 4

The Black Phone

Scott Derrickson's contained scarefest stands strong despite the lack of a sequel. Taking place in the late 70s in Denver, multiple kidnappings has made the youth frightened. After Finney is kidnapped by “the Grabber” and locked up in a basement, he anticipates a terrible outcome. But the disconnected phone on the wall repeatedly calls, with spooky callers offering help, while the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen might rescue him. A solid creepfest. This Saturday, 10.50pm, Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the conflict between faith and wealth, the winner is obvious for greed in Showalter's wonderfully garish true story of the disgraced televangelist plus her lawbreaking partner. Andrew Garfield plays the corrupt Bakker, who states at the beginning, “God does not want us to be poor,”. The couple commence capitalizing on the nation's spiritual convictions. It's a spectacle of tacky decor, excessive cosmetics and hypocrisy, yet the lead actress achieves to depict the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, on Film4

The Spy Mystery

The current week's another release from the filmmaker is a spy mystery as tight as the polo necks used by Michael Fassbender's British agent. He is tasked to discover a mole within their ranks from five suspects – among them is his spouse. Each performer excel of deadpan cool, resulting in an engaging psychological game of deception or honesty unfolds. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela take part the intelligent intelligence fun. October 17th, various showings, the Sky channel
